MRacing TSSI assembly & integration

An assembly that communicates high-voltage presence and monitored electrical faults. I worked on assembling, debugging, and packaging the electronics, with further integration work still ahead.

From board to assembly

I assembled and soldered the TSSI PCB, debugged the electronics, and worked on the motor-controller-to-amber-light connection through wiring and measurements.

I packaged the circuits in a 3D-printed enclosure, modified the housing, and applied epoxy and rubber coating for protection from water exposure.

Holding things in place

The assembly moved before the epoxy had cured. I used clamps as a temporary holding solution to keep the components in position during curing.

Temporary clamps hold the assembly in position while the epoxy cures.

Reading the indicators

Bench testing included illuminating the green and red LEDs. These still photos document illumination, not flashing behavior or an actual monitored fault.

How the indicators work

Under the 2025 Formula SAE rules, the amber Ready to Move Light indicates high voltage outside the accumulator by flashing. The red/green TSSI shows monitored electrical status: steady green means low-voltage power is on with no BMS or IMD fault indicated; flashing red indicates a BMS or IMD fault and turns green off. Amber and green can appear together. Amber and red flash at 2–5 Hz with a 50% duty cycle under their respective conditions.

BMS, IMD, and Ready to Drive

The Battery Management System (BMS) monitors battery cell voltages, temperatures, and monitoring-system faults. The Insulation Monitoring Device (IMD) monitors isolation between the tractive system and chassis, along with its own operation. Ready to Drive is the state where the motors respond to accelerator input, announced by a characteristic sound.

The next integration step

The aero subteam identified an aerodynamic concern with the assembly. I plan to attend an integration meeting with the chassis subteam about improving the 3D-printed enclosure and revising the PCB layout.

My role is to support the redesign. Changes and their results are still pending.

Alongside this work, I assembled front and rear power distribution modules, reworked harnesses, and prepared low-voltage spares to support vehicle assembly and maintenance.
